Upgrading Local Large Language Model (LLM) Hardware: A Personal Journey

This year has been a significant period of exploration and enhancement in my journey with large language models (LLMs). As someone navigating financial constraints—relying on welfare—the pursuit of more powerful computing resources has always been a challenge. However, recent developments in the hardware market provided an unexpected opportunity to elevate my setup without breaking the bank.

Initially, my primary hardware was modest, limiting me to small-scale models like the 0.8 billion parameter range. While these models served their purpose, their capabilities fell short for more demanding tasks. Determined to push beyond these limitations, I kept an eye out for affordable components that could help me scale up.

Fortunately, I came across a used Apple M1 Max logic board with 64GB of RAM listed on Gumtree for just $200. Recognizing the potential, I seized the opportunity and purchased the component. To house this powerful hardware, I acquired a chassis for only $30, which would facilitate mounting and safe operation.

The result has been a remarkable leap forward. I transitioned from working with models around 0.8 billion parameters to now handling models with approximately 35 billion parameters. This upgrade significantly enhances my ability to experiment, generate, and analyze complex language tasks locally.

If you’re interested or have questions about my hardware choices, setup process, or experience running large models on a budget, feel free to ask. Sharing knowledge and experiences can empower others in similar situations to pursue their AI and machine learning goals effectively.
